Cuttin' Camp

 Camped on the South Dakota plains;
Despite the inclement weather,
Corrals and barn, from Burke, just a gaze
We put our outfit together.

A cowboy is my pardner;
Who spends his life on horseback.
He is a cuttin' horse trainer
With his jokin' and his tack.

Our girl youngin', with long, flowin' hair,
Loves school and being out with her horse.
She wanders about without a care;
Content with country livin', of course.

The campfire keeps burnin' bright,
As the East gets gray, we start creepin'
To care for horses at dawn's light--
No, there ain't no chance of sleepin'.

The chuckbox with coffee brewin'
Readies the riders for the day
Then preps the next meal to stewin'
'Fore the school marm can gallop away.

Trainin' horses takes a long time.
Along with more work to be done.
Like muckin' stalls filled with chipped pine
And evenin' chores -- sure do lack the fun.

The rewards of slappin' leather
Out way the hard work of a long day
Singin' is done; added in is some humor;
A pleasant camp we want it to stay.

Its a life most don't understand
So I won't be takin' your time up.
Just come down 'n see first hand
What I'm trin' to tell yuh.
